San Jose Taiko drummer Gina Yamamoto teaches Garden Gate first-grader Tian Tian Lu the basics of drumming at a Sept. 18 school assembly. The assembly was provided free of charge, thanks to an outreach program sponsored by Villa Montalvo and funded by the James Ervin Foundation and the city of Cupertino. On Oct. 4, the school's PTA in plans to hold its Walkaround fundraiser. Students will walk around the field during their P.E. classes; sponsors pledge to pay students by the lap.
